Husky Mania – Frank Palmer Speare:

As the athletic program grew in the fledgling university, President Speare felt that a mascot was needed. In 1927, the University adopted a Siberian Husky named King Husky I, the first of seven living mascots. Speare initially kept the lively dog at his home in Newton. However, after King Husky I escaped twice and ravaged a neighbor’s chickens, forcing the university to pay restitution, Speare opted to kennel the dog between University events.
