Historical Review
Northea tern College chool of Law wa · . labli ·hed in 1 98
in response to a demand for a chool which hould be so thorough
in it work, and conducted on uch a high plane, that it. grad uat .·
would stand well at the bar and be recogniz d a: men of professional attainment and ethical tandard . .
Every effort has been made to e tabli. h and maintain high
standard of entrance and graduation. In order that those d .iring a hort cut to the bar might be d terr d from entering, a
four years' cour e was announced at the out et.
The student body consi ts of men of ability who devot " themselves to their work with marked fidelity, and upon graduation
pa s the bar examinations successfully and enter practic .
The School was establi hed through the coop ration of the
late Hon. James R. Dunbar, the late Prof. Jame. Barr Ame:,
Dean of the Harvard Law School, and Mr. Samu 1 . Bennett,

Successful Career
Being thu. auspiciou ly inaugurated, the fir ·t ev ning law
school of Ma sachu ett entered upon what ha.' proved to be a
mo t ucce ful career. Thirty-five hundred and twenty-seven
tudents have been enrolled, including clerks from the offices of
leading attorneys; clerk and officer from every court in Bo ton;
tate, city, and government officials; teacher and , tudent. from
other law chool ; and a large number of abl m n en ag d in
different lines of busine.
I ncorporation
In January, 1904, a bill wa introduced into th :\lassachu: tt.
Legislature seeking the incorporation of the School, with the
power to grant the degree of Bachelor of Laws. The rapid pa ,_
sage of thi bill by the legi lature, and the ordial recognition and
endorsement of the School by t he bench, the bar, and the head of

The aim of the course is to give a general view of the whole field

Accounting and Kindred Subj"ects
In modern business the lawyer is required to have a broad
experience in busines organization as well as in legal affairs in
order that he may analyze balance sheets, separate real from fictitious assets, and, in the case of bankruptcy proceedings, make a
detailed study of conditions. Lawyers frequently serve as members of the boards of directors of corporations, and with a knowledge of accountip.g added to their legal training their services are
doubly valuable.
The School of Commerce and Finance of Northeastern College aims to complete the education of the lawyer by training him
in business affairs; and with that purpose in view offers reduced
tuition rates to the Law School graduate. Those who have not
the time to take the full course leading to the degrees of B.C.S.
and l\1.C.S. may very profitably pursue special courses in
.accounting and kindred subjects.

Frank Palmer Speare, introduced law courses to the YMCA’s Evening Institute in 1898. Speare recognized the need for a program in legal education for working men who were unable to attend the day classes offered by Harvard and Boston University. In 1904, the program was incorporated as the Evening School of Law of the Boston YMCA with the power to grant the Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree.
The primary goal of the law program was to prepare students for the Massachusetts Bar Examination. The Evening School of Law, which attracted students who worked during the day and who could not afford tuition to other law schools, offered 200 hours of instruction, combining lectures and the case study method. Completion of the law program required four years of study rather than the three years required at law schools with day-time programs. The first teaching staff consisted of five men who taught courses on pleading, property, criminal law, contracts, and torts.
After its incorporation, the Evening School of Law underwent several significant changes. In 1922, the first women law students were admitted into the program; in the same year, the school was renamed Northeastern University School of Law. Because of the increase in student enrollment, divisional campuses of the School of Law were established in Worcester and Springfield in 1917 and in Providence in 1920. In 1938, day courses were implemented, and the School moved from its building on 312 Huntington Avenue to 47 Mount Vernon Street on Beacon Hill. The School of Law became accredited by the University of the State of New York in 1943 and was awarded membership in the American Association of Law School in 1945.
